The dominoes continue to fall in the class of 2017. On Tuesday, Minneapolis (Minn.) North senior wing Isaac Johnson committed to Western Illinois, giving the Leathernecks a strong three-point shooting and slashing presence. 

“They made me feel like a family, like part of the team,” Johnson told NY2LA Sports. “I met the coach’s family. All the players seem like cool guys. Their style of play is already like my high school, so I’m used to it. I already know the system. It’s a great fit for me.”

Hampton and Wisconsin-Green Bay had also offered Johnson. Nebraska-Omaha was also showing interest this fall.  Johnson notified head coach Billy Wright and assistant coach Josh Wolfe, his lead recruiter, about his decision. 

“The head coach was almost in tears,” said Johnson. “They seemed real excited.  Me and Coach Wolfe got real close. I was talking him and the head coach on a daily basis.”

Johnson took his official visit to Western Illinois the weekend of Sept. 24.  “They have a brand new practice gym,” he said. “They just put brand new seating in the main gym. The campus wasn’t too big or small. Everybody there seemed real cool.”

Johnson is the first commitment for Western Illinois in the class of 2017.  The Leathernecks lose leading scorer Garret Covington after this season. They hope Johnson can be their next go-to player.  “They’re looking for me to bring in scoring and leadership,” he said. 

Johnson played with Howard Pulley during the travel season.
