Howard Pulley had a tough run of it in 2015, and it had a lot to do with not having enough scorers.

In 2016, De La Salle (Minnesota) sophomore Gabe Kalscheur will attempt to fill that void.

Fresh off a 3A State Championship, the 5th straight for De La Salle, Kalscheur will bring his talents to the EYBL, and will look to become a dynamic playmaker alongside 2015 leading scorer Gary Trent Jr.

Alec Kinsky caught up with the talented sophomore, addressing a variety of topics about his upcoming EYBL season and the overall development of his game.

1-on-1 With Pulley Guard Gabe Kalscheur

Alec Kinsky: Take my through your preparation for EYBL, what have you heard about the circuit and how are you preparing?

Gabe Kalscheur: Right now, we’re just trying to get together, we’re a new team with some new parts. Our defense is what we’re working on, because we’re smaller. Defense is going to win games, so if we lock down, we’ll get wins.

AK: You are a star for DeLaSalle in Minneapolis, winners of five straight Class 3A (second largest classification) state championships. What do you have to adjust in your game when playing for Pulley? I know this is your first year with the program.

Kalscheur: I have to adjust mentally because they’re all going to be bigger and stronger than me. I know I’m going to bring it each and every game.

AK: How excited are you to run with Gary Trent Jr. and Tre Jones? I imagine you’re used to having a lot of defensive pressure on you, and they should help make your life easier.

Kalscheur: I’m actually really excited to play with Gary and Tre. They like to push it and play up tempo, and that’s how I like to play.

AK: Have you learned anything from Gary so far?

Kalscheur: I’m really just learning from example. I’m obviously in the backup role, but I’m learning a lot.

AK: Sophomores playing in the EYBL is rare. Is that something you’re ready for physically?

Kalscheur: I haven’t always played up, but I didn’t want to play 16U this year because I want to play the best competition. If I play against the best competition, I hold myself to the highest standard.

AK: You dropped 27 points in the state championship game, playing your best ball at the end of the year. Where is your confidence level right now?

Kalscheur: My confidence level is very high. I’m going to show it on the EYBL circuit and the tournaments coming up.

AK: Excited for the rigorous travel schedule?

Kalscheur: Yeah, the places we go are fun. New York, Georgia, Chicago. Should be a lot of fun.

AK: When did you first realize that you were going to play at the next level?

Kalscheur: I would say my freshman year at DeLaSalle. Coming in and competing with them I knew I had a future.
