Howard Pulley big man Theo John is coming off a high school season in which he nearly helped his squad (Champlin Park) to an undefeated state title.

John is one of the best defensive post players on the circuit, and has already piled up plenty of blocks through the first two sessions. He is a constant factor for opposing teams driving the lane.

Nate Bucsko had a chance to speak with John about the end to his high school season, how Pulley can make a run at Peach Jam, and what it will take for him to reach the next level as a player.

Nate Bucsko: What's something you felt you did really well in the first two sessions? What's something you need to improve going forward?

TJ: I feel that I left 100 percent effort out there and didn't take plays off. I am going to try and take more time in the post because I was rushing last time and really not doing well offensively.

NB: What's the main part of your game that you want to master this summer?

TJ: Defensively, I want to be able to block all the shots that I can and keep the other team to one shot per possession. That's all about effort so skill-wise I want to continue to improve offensively from mid-range to the block.

NB: Any hard feelings between you and your Apple Valley teammates? (John's Champlin Park lost to them in the state championship, spoiling their undefeated season.)

TJ: (laughs) No no we are good now.

NB: What's your favorite part of playing in the EYBL as opposed to high school?

TJ: There is more competition in the EYBL. You have to bring it every game because if you don't you are going to get smacked no matter who it is.

NB: What's one thing that you want college coaches to take away from watching you play?

TJ: I want them to see my defense and effort along with my body. I have a 7'3" wingspan and a high motor. They can't see the behind the scenes stuff, but I'm always in the weight room and I love getting better as a player and I will do whatever it takes to succeed.

NB: Any big plans outside of ball this spring/summer?

TJ: Nope, I'm focusing on my game 100 percent.

NB: What are your hobbies outside of sports?

TJ: Taking care of school work, lifting weights and having some family time.

NB: Walk me through your pregame routine.

TJ: I stretch a little, do whatever I have to do to get warm, thank God for all of my blessings and then game time.

NB: What's your favorite meal?

TJ: Chipotle.

NB: Who is your biggest inspiration?

TJ: My dad. He's always pushing me to do my best and he lets me know if I'm not doing something right.
