The Minnesota Golden Gophers basketball program isn't used to keeping top-notch in-state talent.

That tune changed on Monday, as Howard Pulley/Hopkins HS star Amir Coffey pledged his future to Richard Pitino and the Golden Gophers' coaching staff.

Ranked No. 33 by ESPN in the 2016 class, Coffey is the highest-ranked recruit for the Gophers since Royce White in 2008 (who never suited up for the Gophers). They also signed in-state recruit and former De La Salle star Jarvis Johnson in 2015, but he was deemed ineligible by the Gophers' medical staff.

Coffey missed the entire 2015 EYBL season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, but proved in 2014 that he was an elite recruit. In 21 games as a sophomore, the 6-foot-7 swingman averaged 9.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists. Coffey was expected to be the focal point of Howard Pulley in 2015 before his injury.

The new Minnesota-commit will star for Hopkins High School, a renowned powerhouse looking to make noise in the state tournament in 2016. For the first time in a long while, Minnesota fans will get to watch an up-close look at the future of their program.

Amir follows in his father's footsteps, as Richard Coffey was a star for the Golden Gophers in the late '80s.
